Summer Movie Review 2008

Hey readers!  How's it going.  It's August 1st, 2008 and I think it's time to review the movies I saw this summer.

I by no means consider myself to be a valid movie critic and I do not intend for my reviews to mean much of anything except to show people that I have indeed seen these movies.

Movie #1: IRON MAN
Director: Jon Favreau
Opinion:
Awesome movie!  Iron Man is born of a rich man named Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) who designs and distributes weapons to the US military.  His transformation from civilian to hero is really awesome.

I see the underline message of this movie as this: It's not enough to have a lot of money; You have to have intelligence.  If Tony Stark had simply stopped at being rich and never embraced his academic abilities, his character would have been killed early in the movie.  If this had happened, the movie would've only been about 20 minutes long and boring.

Movie #2: Get Smart

Director: Peter Segal

Opinion:
Two Tumbs Up!  I never watched the 1965 TV show on which this movie is based, but from what I hear from others who have seen it, they place a bunch of classic items and themes into the movie that will keep the old school folk interested.

Steve Carell gives a perfect performance in this film as agent "Maxwell Smart" for a branch of the government that the general public is lead to believe no longer exists.

Again, I don't want to give the story line away. Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Anne Hathaway, and Dalip Singh also appear in this movie and play fitting characters.

Moral of the story... Sometimes those who are the best at what they do are the ones you need to trust the least.  At least, that sounds like a good moral for this story...  Oh, and bombs can be stored in the most musical of places!  Yay!

Movie #3: The Dark Knight

Director: Christopher Nolan

Opinion:
All I can say about this movie is WOW!  Heath Ledger as The Joker sums up why this movie is so amazing.  It is really a shame that he died so young.  If this performance was a glimps of the kind of actor he was developing into, the world lost a great.

In this 2nd installment of the new Batman series, The Joker takes over as Gotham City's main villain.  This is a take on the Joker nobody has done before.  Jack Nicholson's Joker was still slightly goofy and not really "evil."  Heath Ledger's Joker is a demented, twisted and very dark.  The kind of evil the Joker brings to Gotham is far beyond the normal Mafia criminals Batman helped Gotham deal with before.

If you are a expecting the "na na na na na Batman!" type of Batman, this movie is not for you.  It is definitely a darker take on Batman.

One of my favorite things about these new Batman movies is that Gotham is a more realistic city.  It's not all fantasy-like as it was in the previous Batman movie series.

I saw this movie in IMAX.  Much of the movie was shot using IMAX cameras, thus, much of the movie took up the whole IMAX screen.  If you have not seen this movie yet, go see it in IMAX.  If it is no longer showing in IMAX... well... you missed out...

Belle Schmidlin

I know I have not written a blog in over a year.  So many things have happened.

I started and completed my first year of teaching as a band director, attended concerts, and many other things.

In this blog I want to give my respects to 2 people who have recently gone home to Jesus.

The first is Baby Cate Cantrell who after a fruitful 7 months of life was called home to Jesus after her fight with a heart defect.  More info on her struggle and prayer chain can be found through the link I provided on her name.

The next person I want to talk about is my Grandmother, Belle Schmidlin.  She passed away last Wednesday, June 16, 2008.  She lived a long life and was 82 years old.  I will have my memories of my Grandma forever with me and I will be writing a personal essay about my memories of her shortly.  I will post my essay of memories of her once I complete it.  I'm going to spend a bit of time on it and try to dig really deep into my memory bank for any memories I have that I want to share.

I know anyone who reads this will want to share their sympathy with me.  Believe me when I say that I am at peace with my Grandma's passing.  It was her time and Jesus has prepared a place for her.

As for Baby Cate, I cannot even begin to imagine what all the Cantrell's are going through.  I read their blog daily and devoted many hours of Adoration for Baby Cate as many people across the nation did.  Though the outcome was not what we hoped, God's plan is greater than all of us and Cate's time here with us will be a blessing written down in the history books of all who knew her or prayed for her.

I think I'm seriously going to start blogging again.  But until my next post, keep the people I mentioned in this post in your prayers.

God bless
